Ramadan is the 9th month of Muslim Calendar and is the most holy month for the followers of Islam. It is believed that in this month the Holy Quran was descended from heaven to earth. During this month the first revelations of the Quran (Holi book of Islam) were received by Muhammad. Fasting is included in the 5 pillars of Islam including prayer, faith, pilgrimage and almsgiving. As the holy month Ramadan starts each day Muslims do not drink or eat anything from dawn to sunset. Bad or abusive behavior and impure thoughts should be avoided during the sacred month.
Ramadan timings are decided by the crescent-shaped moon sighting in Saudi Arabia. It signifies that in Islam Hijri or Lunar calendar is accepted in which the number of days in a year is 364. It is based upon the different phases of the lunar or moon cycle. All the muslims fast daily during Ramadan and only break the fast with their family and friends. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated as a 3 day festival at the end of the Ramadan Month. Ramadan 2024 will begin on the 11th March Monday evening according to the moon sighting and will end at sunset on Tuesday 9th April.
