Lathmar Holi 2024 Dates

Lathmar Holi 2024

Lathmar Holi will be played on 24th March in Barsana and on 25th March in Nandgaon however celebrations will begin on 18th and 19th March respectively.

Why is Lathmar Holi Celebrated?; Story and History of Lathmar Holi

Lathmar Holi 2024

It is said that Lathmar Holi is a part of the divine play (Lila) of the Lord Shri Krishna. It is written in the scriptures that Lord Krishna used to live in Nandgaon and Radha was from Barsana. On occasion of Holi which was the favourite festival of the Lord, he used to visit Radha and Gopis in Barsana to play Holi with them. They used to smear Gulal-Abir on their faces and throw water on them. Krishna was over-friendly with other Gopis. Once when he put Gulal on Radha’s face all her friends and older females decided to teach a lesson to him and his friends. So they took bamboo sticks (lathis) and ran behind Krishna and his friends to beat them. They drove them away, beating them with sticks. To commemorate the life of Krishna and the divine love between Radha and Krishna and their small funny fights this festival is celebrated every year in the same manner. Now people come in thousands of numbers to watch and play this special Holi.

Lathmar Holi Celebrations

The Lathmar Holi celebrations go on for almost a week. To play this Holi men and women wear traditional costumes where men wear pagdi and Dhoti and women wear lehenga and chunri. They play with colours and dance and sing along with playing dhol-nagada. Usually men come from Nandgaon and tease the women by saying annoying things, singing irritating songs and doing things to provoke them. Now all men try to run away but the unfortunate males get trapped and get bruises, now they have to wear women’s clothings and dance in front of everyone. They smear Gulal-Abir on each other’s faces, they chant the name of Radha-Krishna and dance in full fun and enthusiasm.
