Why is Holi called the Festival of Colours?

Holi 2024

Holi is a festival of colours as everyone knows it in today’s world but why is it called so and why do we play with colours on Holi? A beautiful legend is behind these sayings and celebrations associated with the life of Lord Krishna. It is said that when Krishna was born his uncle (mama) demon Kansa wanted to kill him because of a prophecy that said Krishna is going to kill Kansa and will free the people from his atrocities. So Kansa sends Pootna named Rakshasi (demoness) to kill Krishna. Pootna breastfeeds Little Krishna with poisonous milk. Krishna survived but his skin colour turned blue due to the poison. Krishna became conscious about this because His love Radha was so fair skinned so Maa Yashoda told him to play Radha with colours. So Krishna coloured her in his own colour due to love for her. Radha always loved Krishna. To remember this day and eternal love of Radha-Krishna everyone plays with colours and dances.
