Heat Wave Alert for Mumbai and Thane | IMD issues Thunderstorm & Heat Wave Alert

India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai and Thane due to extremely hot weather conditions. On Monday, IMD released this news and warned people to avoid going out. Currently. Thane and Vikhroli in Mumbai recorded the highest temperature, which exceeded 39 degrees Celsius. This heatwave is expected until Saturday, with temperature forecasts reaching 40 degrees Celsius during the day and dropping only to around 26°C at night. IMD scientist Sushma Nair, also stated that there is a possibility of thunderstorms too. The possibility of heatwaves keeps Mumbai hot and humid because the heatwave follows the pattern of increasingly high temperatures seen across Maharashtra. Residents were advised to take several precautions during the day when heat waves are at peak. IMD suggested staying hydrated throughout the day, avoiding going outside, avoiding direct sunlight if going outside, and wearing light and breathable clothes. In addition, the government also installed drinking water at public places like railway stations to help mitigate the effects of the heat.

According to the weather forecast, there is a change of light rainfall in the areas of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Wednesday. But there is no rainfall record, which raises the temperature in the city. India, IMD also recorded the highest daytime temperature in a decade at Colaba and Santacruz.

Meanwhile, the country is preparing for the onset of the Southwest Monsoon. The IMD predicted its likely advancement into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands by May 19, 2024.

With this weather condition, many cities in India can expect different patterns of weather conditions. There is the possibility of having a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Kerala, which will bring isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (40-60 km) to various regions of India like Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Gujarat state. It is an update from the et department for May 14 to May 17 2024 and this is visible in Mumbai, Thane and around areas.

However, IMD also warns about the heat wave conditions in cities like Konkan, West Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. Right now, Rajasthan and Punjab are also facing severe heat waves.

In summary, in cities that are facing severe heat waves, it is important to take precautions. People should hydrate themselves throughout the day whether they are staying at home or going outside.
