Chopta-Tungnath is exclusive for every season and is conducted every year. Winter and Autumn treks are most popular among tourists. It is an adventurous event in which everyone has to put their strength together to reach the goal. The trek is 3,690 m (12,110 ft) high from the sea level. You can visit Nanda Devi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba peaks during this trek. It takes 4 days (can also be covered in 5-6 days) to complete the trek.

How to reach for Chopta-Tungnath trek:

  • By bus: You can use a government or a private bus from Haridwar to reach the base camp of this trek in Chopta. It takes less than 8 hours to cover 200 km. 
  • By road: You can come to Haridwar by train and then take a bus or a taxi from Haridwar to Sari village- the base camp of this trek. 
  • By airways: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest airport to Chopta. Then you have to take a vehicle to reach the base camp which takes about 6.5 hours to cover 211 km.

Schedule of Chopta-Tungnath Trek:

For the Chopta-Tungnath Trek, 2-3 routes are suggested by tour operators. You can take any route to enjoy the beauty of Uttarakhand. We suggest that you take the Sari to Chandrashila route. 

 

  •  Reach Sari village from Haridwar:

Sari, which is located in the Rudraprayag district, is the base camp of Chopta-Tungnath Trek. Hotels, guest houses, and camps are available for trekkers. Sari is situated 6600 feet above the sea level. Trickers stay here for a night and then proceed to go to Deoria Tal the next day to continue their trek.

  •  Towards Deoria Tal:

Deoria Tal is 3 km away from the Sari village. You need 1 hour to complete 1300 feet elevation for the trek. You will come across Maple Forest and Hawa Ghar which are built by the Forest Department to make trek easy for trekkers. Beautiful farmlands, ancient temples, and villages are seen throughout the journey. Then you stay for a night in the tents near the lake. The total climb to this point is 7800 feet. 

 

  •  Chopta trek:

It is the longest day of Chandrashila Trek as you further climb 1000 feet. It takes 9 hours to reach Chopta from Deoria Tal. Rohini Bugyal, Akash Kamini Waterfall, and Bhrujgali are the water points that you can see during the trek. You will find small hurts and shepherds in the mountains of Chopta. You will reach the ChoptaI camp at 5 pm. The total elevation is 8000 feet above sea level.

  •  Chopta To Chandrashila:

This will happen on day 4 of the Chopta-Tungnath Trek. You can see the thousand-year-old she want Temple in this route. Then you have to cover the distance of 8 km from Chopta to Chandrashila in 5 hours. You can also find Tungnath temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Chandrashila is located 1.5 km above Tungnath Temple. When you reach Chandrashila you can see some of the famous peaks such as  Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Kamet, Dunagiri, Chaukhamba, Kedar dome, Thalay Sagar, Gangotri ranges, and Jahanukut. Here the total elevation is 12100 feet. 

After staying a night at Chandrashila you come back to Chopta. 

 

  •  Back to Haridwar:

You come back from Haridwar after staying at Chopta. Then you can take any mode of transport to go back home.

Precautions taken for Chopta-Tungnath Trek:

  • Always carry a trekking pole. You must not move without the use of a trekking pole. 
  • You should avoid jeans and other tight-fitting clothes. Instead, wear clothes that are light and can be easily dried. 
  • You should not roam the place without your tour if you don’t know about it. Various unexpected events occur and mountains can be dangerous. 
  • You should keep yourself hydrated during the track. Therefore you should carry enough water. 
  • You should wear good quality trekking shoes. Do not wear sports shoes. 
  • You should not take any medicines without asking your guide. 
  • Walk on flat ground while descending. You should dig in heels while ascending. 

 

Best time for trekking:

Many people believe that Chopta is a yearly trekking destination that you can visit anytime. However, March to May is considered the best time for Chopta-Tungnath Trek as the climate is warm and beautiful. 

 

Things you should carry for the trek:

  • Good woolen socks, good trekking shoes and trekking poles. 
  • Winter jacket, Trekkie pants, woolen hat
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
