Netflix has reported a significant milestone for its Indian content, with over a billion views registered in 2023. The streaming service’s “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report” unveils insights into viewership patterns from July to December 2023, shedding light on the popularity of Indian productions and global viewing trends.

In a remarkable achievement for Indian cinema, movies and series from the country amassed over a billion views on Netflix. Sujoy Ghosh’s “Jaane Jaan” emerged as the top-watched movie, captivating audiences with 20.2 million views. It was closely followed by Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan” and Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Khufiya,” with 16.2 million and 12.1 million views respectively.

Other notable Indian titles include “OMG 2,” “Lust Stories 2,” “Dream Girl 2,” and the true-crime documentary “Curry & Cyanide,” each garnering millions of views.

Among the series, “The Railway Men,” featuring Kay Kay Menon, Babil Khan, and Divyenndu, emerged as the top title. Set against the backdrop of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Leak, it attracted 10.6 million views, followed by “Kohraa,” “Gun and Gulaabs,” and “Kaala Paani.”

Globally, non-English shows and movies are gaining significant traction among Netflix subscribers, accounting for nearly a third of all viewing. Korean, Spanish, and Japanese language stories have captured substantial shares of viewing outside of English, with standout titles such as “Dear Child,” “Forgotten Love,” “Pact of Silence,” “Mask Girl,” “Yu Yu Hakusho,” and “Berlin.”

The report also highlights the most-watched global titles on Netflix, with “Leave the World Behind” starring Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts leading the pack with 121 million views. Adam Sandler’s animated film “Leo” followed closely with 96 million views. On the series front, the anime-inspired live-action series “One Piece” attracted 72 million views.

Fan-favorite original titles like “Wednesday,” “Red Notice,” and “Squid Game” continued to draw millions of views in 2023, reaffirming their enduring popularity long after their premiere on Netflix.

As Netflix continues to diversify its content offerings and cater to a global audience, the engagement report provides valuable insights into viewers’ preferences and consumption patterns.
