As per the ministry of Environmental & Forests of India, a forest area protected and proclaimed by the State government to restore and protect its flora-fauna, ecology and geological value, whether it is in a wildlife sanctuary or not is considered as a National Park. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has a list of its special protected areas. In India national parks come under the category 2 of the IUCN protected areas. The first national park was established, Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand in 1936.
After the enactment of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 the government made it important to establish more and more National Parks in order to protect the environment and various important species of flora and fauna. In 1973 the tiger project started to protect and rehabilitate the tiger population in India. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 restricts human activities within National Parks. Only activities specifically permitted by the state’s chief wildlife warden under special circumstances outlined in the Act are allowed.
Objective of National Parks
The government establishes National Parks to preserve, protect, and regenerate nature and natural resources like plants and animals (flora and fauna). These parks can also serve recreational and educational purposes, raising awareness and understanding about nature and its resources. National Parks are typically maintained in their original natural state. Here are some objectives to create national parks.Â

- Increasing awareness, educational and cultural purposes. To promote for recreational and entertainment purposes.Â
- To prevent ecological degradation of any natural resources and prevent deforestationÂ
- Considering the needs of local communities and different culture maintaining the balance between wildlife and human populationÂ
- To promote tourism and better the relation between local communities, ecosystem and human.Â
