When we were younger, we used to run towards our mother if anything bad happened to us or in any kind of problematic situation. As Rudyard Kipling once said, “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” A mother cares, guides and protects her kids from everyone and everything. Mothering Sunday

Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of May every year. Christians associate it with Mother Mary. It is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent which comes before Easter. People celebrate this day three weeks before Easter to honour and give thanks to Mother Mary also known as Virgin Mary. People visit churches to meet their ‘mother’ on this day. During the 16th century, this festival spread throughout Europe with the expansion of Christianity. On this day people go to the local churches for service. They give their moms and grandmothers gifts and take a day off to join their family and see their mother. In England and Ireland people go to ‘daughter’ churches the whole year but on Mothering Sunday they visit Mother’s church for offerings thanks to their mother. However, by 1935 celebrations of this decreased throughout Europe.

Mothers Day Origins

In the US Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day celebration is linked with a lady named Anna Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908 she established this day remembering her own mother. After the death of her own mother, she worked hard to set a day for her and all mothers in the world. She worked diligently and promoted it, putting all her efforts into it. Finally, President Woodrow Wilson made it an official holiday in 1914 in the United States. Her hard work and love for her mother paid off. However After some time, it became more and more commercial and she hated it, calling it a “Hallmark Holiday”. She died in 1948.
