India is a parliamentary form of government where the government is headed by the Prime minister. However, the Prime Minister alone doesn’t handle all the departments. He or she is assisted by ministers to do his task. Today in this article we’ll talk about cabinet ministers of India. Who are Cabinet Ministers?

Cabinet ministers are the senior most important ministers of the government, who handle the important portfolios such as Finance, Defence, Home etc . The cabinet ministers are a close knit group of ministers that is headed by the Prime minister of India and act as the principal advisor of the PM. Cabinet ministers help the PM in governing the country by giving their expertise in their respective fields and Portfolio. These cabinet  ministers are part of a larger group called the Union Council of ministers. Union Council of Ministers include Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State, their number should not be more than 15% of the total strength of Lok Sabha.

How to become Cabinet Minister?

To become Cabinet Minister of India, one needs to be eligible to be a member of parliament. If the cabinet minister is an MP at the time of appointment they he or she can work without any issue. If the cabinet minister is not the member of either of the houses of parliament while appointed, he or she has to secure the membership of either Lok Sabha or Rajya sabha within 6 months to keep serving as Cabinet Ministers. If failed to do so they’ll have to vacate their Post.
