Thane Railway Chaos: Heavy Rain and Sandstorm Cause Train Service Suspension and Stampede

The Thane Railway Station became a scene of chaos on May 13, 2024, as heavy rain and a sandstorm wreaked havoc on the area. The situation turned dire as local train services on the Central Railway were suspended for over two hours due to damage caused by the storm to overhead equipment between two stations. This suspension led to a stampede at the station, as commuters struggled to navigate the unexpected delays and disruptions to their journeys.

Mumbai and its surrounding areas, including Thane, Kalyan, and Palghar, were hit hard by the adverse weather conditions, with heavy rain and strong winds battering the region. The intensity of the storm was such that it bent the overhead pole between Thane and Mulund stations, forcing authorities to suspend train services around 4.15 pm. It wasn’t until around 6.45 pm that slow train services were able to resume, leaving commuters stranded and facing significant inconvenience during peak evening rush hours.

The impact of the storm extended beyond Thane, as evidenced by a tragic incident in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area. Here, a 100-foot illegal billboard collapsed onto a petrol pump at the Cheddanagar Junction, claiming the lives of 14 people. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) launched rescue operations, managing to save 74 individuals who sustained injuries in the incident.

In response to this tragedy, the Mumbai police swiftly took action, registering a case at the Pantnagar police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the owner of the hoarding, Bhavesh Bhide, and others involved in the installation of the illegal structure.

Overall, the events of May 13, 2024, serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather conditions and the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and mitigation measures to safeguard the lives and well-being of citizens.
