1. Always make sure that your meals are based on high-fibre, starchy carbohydrates. Some foods with starchy carbs are potatoes, rice, tomatoes, bread, and pasta and they should take up at least one-third of your diet. Try to include as much high-fibre food as you can such as potatoes with skin, brown rice etc. There is a common misconception that having foods with a high starch content makes you fat, which is not true. If we compare them gram to gram, carbohydrates have less than half the calories that fats have. You should try to include one starchy food in every meal of your day. Keep fats at bay, since they are the reason for weight gain if eaten excessively.

2. Make fruits and vegetables your best friends. It is proven that the human body should consume at least 5 different varieties of fruits and vegetables every day. Trust me, it is not as hard as it sounds. Include at least one fruit in your meals, especially breakfast. You can also have fresh fruit in the middle of the day as a snack. One portion of fruit can also be consumed in the form of fruit juice or can be added to your breakfast smoothies. Fruits and vegetables are extremely high in fibre and a lot of other important nutrients. They are the ultimate foods to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

3. Eating fish, especially oily fish, is very good for your health. They are very good for your health as they contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. Oily fishes have omega-3 fatty acids that improve stamina and reduce the risk of heart disease. Some oily fishes are salmon, trout, herring, and sardines while some non-oily fishes are cod, tuna, coley, skate and more. Fish is a versatile food item and can be prepared in many ways. Grill, roast, fry or simply marinate and bake them and eat as your main dish or add some small pieces to your side salad. If you are someone who likes sushi, some salmon nigiri can be the perception source of omega 3 for you.

4. As important as it is to eat healthy foods, it is equally important to eliminate unhealthy ones. Saturated fat and sugar should be consumed in the smallest amounts possible. Having a lot of saturated fats puts you at the risk of high cholesterol and increases vulnerability to heart diseases. Men should not have more than 30 grams of sugar and saturated fat per day on average while women should not have more than 20 grams of the same. It is suggested that children have less saturated fats than adults. However, a low-fat diet should not be encouraged among children below the age of 5. Full-fat dairy products like cheese and yoghurt should be given to kids under 2 years of age. All information related to saturated fat and sugar content is given on food labels.

5. Salt consumption should also be kept under control. Overconsumption of salt leads to high blood pressure, which can increase your vulnerability to heart diseases and strokes. Salt is present in almost everything so even if we don’t add it to our food, we are still consuming it. Three-quarters of packaged food such as sauces, breads and cereals already have salt in them. The advised amount of salt that can be consumed by a human is 6 grams. If a food item has more than 1.5 grams of salt for every 100 grams, then that food has a high salt content.

6. Some exercise along with having a balanced diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it reduce the risk of health conditions but also helps in maintaining weight. It keeps your overall health and body regulated. Being overweight/ obese or underweight can be critical for your health. Obesity has many risks such as diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems, and even cancer. By consuming fewer calories and exercising regularly, a healthy lifestyle can be achieved. Just spending 30 to 45 minutes of your day in physical activity will be fruitful for your health long term.

7. Drinking water is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Especially in summer, it is easy to get dehydrated. According to health statistics, a person should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. The aim is to supply your body with fluids. But not all fluids are good for you; you should always go for non-carbonated, non-alcoholic drinks that are low in sugar. Some examples of the same are coconut water, lemonade (without sugar), unsweetened fruit juices and teas etc.

8. As opposed to the common belief of eating less, breakfast should be eaten every day. It is wrong to skip breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day. A healthy breakfast keeps you full and energised for a long period.
